On Monday the top runners in the world take to the streets of Boston for the 2025 Boston Marathon – the 129th running of the event.
The 129th running of the Boston Marathon will take place this Monday. One of seven World Major Marathons, it’s another competitive field vying for the title in both the men’s and women’s divisions this year. On the men’s side, defending champion Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia is back looking to repeat. He’ll be trying to hold off a field that includes Evans Chebet of Kenya, who won in 2022 and 2023 but finished third last year while dealing with an Achilles injury.

In the wheelchair divisions, both last year’s men’s and women’s champions are back. Marcel Hug of Switzerland claimed his seventh Boston title last year, and did so with a record time of 1:15:35. Eden Rainbow-Cooper of the UK will be trying to capture her second title. With her win last year, she became the first woman from Great Britain to take the title.
There is supposed to be ideal running weather throughout the race on Monday. The forecast calls for temps to be in the low to mid-50s with cloud cover.
The Boston Marathon course takes runners through the Massachusetts towns of Hopkinton, Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley Newton, and Brookline before finally arriving in Boston itself. Heartbreak Hill is the most famous part of the course – it’s a half-mile ascent that occurs between Miles 20 and 21 near Boston College.
