Men’s Singles to Watch

There will be no sign of men’s champion Sinner on opening day, but second seed Alexander Zverev isn’t a bad consolation prize as he goes up against Frenchman Lucas Pouille in the late match.

There’s a feeling among tennis fans that 2025 could finally be the year Zverev manages to get his hands on a major after almost a decade of fruitless attempts.

However, the German has joked he needs Novak Djokovic to allow him to end his Grand Slam drought before it comes to fruition:

Earlier on Sunday, sixth seed Casper Ruud will take on Spaniard Jaume Munar in what promises to be a tightly drawn opener, with the former hoping to improve on last year’s third-round finish.

Former world No4 Kei Nishikorihas reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on four occasions but will face a tough first-round task against Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro.

Women’s Singles to Watch

All eyes will be on Sabalenka on Sunday as she and Sloane Stephens are set to cause some sparks in what promises to be a testing opening match of the Belarusian’s title defense.

Three years have passed since Sabalenka last lost a match in this tournament, but the likes of Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek will have something to say about her clinching three crowns in a row.

Russia’s Mirra Andreeva and Spaniard Paula Badosa will also be among those looking to cause a stir and the respective No14 and No11 seeds will face Marie Mouzkova and Xin Wang first up on Sunday.
