Dricus du Plessis and Sean Strickland will meet in the Octagon for the second time on Saturday as the middleweight duo duke it out for the UFC middleweight championship in Sydney, Australia. ‘DDP’ defeated Strickland via split decision to take the 185lb crown a little more than one year ago, but the latter will get his chance for redemption at UFC 312 after such a nail-biting result in their first matchup. But first, an intriguing card of four fights featuring some promising local talents and those climbing their way through the ranks will set the stage in the preliminary matchups.

Colby Thicknesse vs. Aleksandre Topuria

One of five undefeated fighters on Saturday’s card, Colby Thicknesse will put his unblemished record on the line against Aleksandre Topuria, the older brother of current UFC featherweight champion, Ilia.

Topuria Sr (5-1) will be making his UFC debut in Sydney and, like his brother, possesses an intimidating record stacked with two submissions wins, three straight KO wins and no decisions.

The Georgian hasn’t got out of the first round in any of those three fights, though having not fought since May 2023 could bite him against fellow debutant Thicknesse, who fought four times last year and has also finished each of his last three fights in the first round.

Wang Cong vs. Bruna Brasil

Chinese contender Wang Cong (6-1) is looking to come back from her first career defeat by getting back to the kind of winning ways that saw her knock Victoria Leonardo out in her UFC debut:

She faces Bruna Brasil, who usually fights at strawweight but will make the move up to 125lbs for her UFC debut at flyweight, a move that could go one of two ways.

Brasil (10-4-1) lost to Denise Gomes via TKO in her UFC debut but has since been to three straight decisions and is targeting back-to-back wins for the first time since 2022.

Tom Nolan vs. Viacheslav Borshchev

Queensland native Tom Nolan (8-1) will take on Viacheslav Borshchev (8-4-1) in the hopes of putting together three straight wins for the first time in his UFC career.

The Australian a four-inch advantage in both reach and height against ‘Slava Claus’, who may have rescued his future in the promotion after edging James Llontop via split decision last August.

Home favorite Nolan came into the UFC having developed a penchant for finishing opponents, and he’s looking to get back to those methods after a decision win over Alex Reyes last time out.

Jack Jenkins vs. Gabriel Santos

Another home draw likely to get the fans on their feet, Jack Jenkins (13-3) is due to close out the prelim card against Gabriel Santos (11-2) in a matchup that could be the toughest of his career to date.

Brazilian up-and-comer Santos lost his first two UFC fights to two very capable opponents in Lerone Murphy and David Onama but has since bagged his first promotion win over Chinese star Yizha.

Featherweight ‘Mosquitinho’ will boast a two-inch reach advantage in height and reach, and Jenkins could be in for a long night as one of the bigger Australian underdogs.
