Unseeded Kristina Mladenovic and Zhang Shuai take on Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday

France’s Kristina Mladenovic and China’s Zhang Shuai entered the U.S. Open women’s doubles draw unseeded. On Friday afternoon, the pair looks to leave it as champions. Mladenovic, 31, has won six Grand Slam doubles titles, most recently with Caroline Garcia the 2022 French Open. Zhang has two Grand Slams to her credit, winning at Flushing Meadows with Samantha Stosur in 2021. Mladenovic and Zhang will take on the seventh-seeded duo in the event, Lyudmyla Kichenok of Ukraine and Jeļena Ostapenko of Latvia, who are each looking for a first Grand Slam doubles championship.

Mladenovic and Zhang advanced to the final with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 upset on Wednesday of third-seeded Kateřina Siniaková of Czechia and American Taylor Townsend, who had won at Wimbledon in July.

Kichenok and Ostapenko hammered 10th-seeded Chan Hao-ching of Taiwan and Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova by a 6-1, 6-2 count. Chan and Kudermetova had knocked out top-seeded duo Gabrielle Dabrowski of Canada and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand, the defending champions, in the quarterfinals.

Friday makes Mladenovic’s 10th appearance in a Grand Slam doubles final and Zhang’s fourth. Kichenok and Ostapenko reached the Australian Open final in January, losing to Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan and Belgium’s Elise Mertens.

Kichenok is currently seventh in the world doubles rankings while Ostapenko is 18th. Mladenovic, a world No. 1 doubles player back in 2019, is 45th and Zhang, who peaked at No. 2 in 2022, is currently ranked 63rd. Ostapenko is the most accomplished singles player in the group with eight career titles, including a French Open victory in 2017, and a current No. 10 ranking.
