Surprisingly, Stanford and Miami square off for the first time in the history of these storied programs on Saturday night.

No. 9 Miami hosts Stanford in the first-ever meeting between these schools in Week 9 on Saturday, now that they are ACC foes. Miami is coming off its first loss of the season in just its second ACC game of the season, in a 24-21 loss to Louisville at home. While they are considerable underdogs tonight, the Cardinal is trying to get back to .500 on the season with a 3-4 overall record and a 2-2 conference record. Stanford is coming off its most impressive win of the season in a 20-13 victory over Florida State. After a stunning opening victory against Alabama, the Seminoles have now lost four in a row. That included a 28-22 loss against Miami for then No. 18 FSU, which was the Hurricanes last win two weeks ago. The Hurricanes should be able to bounce back tonight knowing that it has beat three ranked opponents in its first five games of the season. It doesn’t hurt Miami’s cause either that it is favored by 28.5-points tonight.

The Hurricanes were fortunate to be as close as they were in beating the Cardinals in their first loss of the season. That is because QB Carson Beck threw four interceptions without a touchdown against Louisville. It was a huge upset against No. 2 Miami. Louisville got up 14-0 early and the Cardinals never trailed the rest of the way. The loss ended a 10-game home winning streak. The last team to beat Miami at home was none other than Louisville in 2023. Beck still threw for 271 yards with Malachi Toney going for 135 of those. Toney scored a touchdown on a 12-yard run in the middle of the fourth quarter and he caught a two-point conversion from Beck to get the Hurricanes within three points. But Miami couldn’t score again to narrowly miss the comeback completion. Winning the turnover battle has to be priority No. 1 against Stanford tonight.

Florida State was stopped at the goal line by Stanford in the final play of the game to pull off the improbable upset. Stanford stuffed Seminoles running back Gavin Sawchuk at the goal line on an untimed down to hand FSU its ninth ACC loss in a row. The Seminoles nearly pulled off the comeback with their backup QB. Michai Danzy threw up a 49-yard heave on third and 22 to get to the nine with two seconds remaining. Stanford was called for pass interference on the ensuing play to warrant one untimed final play. FSU lost despite out gaining the Cardinal 444 to 293. Stanford QB Ben Gulbranson was held to just 90 yards passing on 13 attempts with a touchdown and interception. Running back Cole Tabb was the huge star of the show for Stanford, rushing for 118 yards and a score. The Cardinal will need to ratchet up their offense quickly to have any chance at back-to-back against Florida teams.
