India looks for another win in its 5-game T20 series with England as action continues in Chennai on Saturday
India put a victory to bed early, winning by seven wickets on Wednesday in Kolkata with 43 balls remaining, to take a 1-0 lead over England in its five-game T20I series. The second match of the set is scheduled for Saturday in Chennai. This is the first series between the teams since 2022 in England, in which India claimed a 2-1 victory, with the teams last meeting in India in 2021 with the hosts claiming a 3-2 series win. In five T20I series, India is 4-0-1 and defeated the English in the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup in Guyana.

India was chasing 133 when it batted and put the match away as Abhishek Sharma put up 79 runs on 34 balls, including eight 6s, and Sanju Samson added 26 on 20. Player of the match Varun Chakravarthy bowled to a 3-23 performance while Arshdeep Singh went for 2-17 and Axar Patel posted 2-22.
England captain Jos Buttler did what he could with 68 runs on 44 balls but Phil Salt went out on a three-ball duck on Singh’s spin bowling and the English went out with 132. Harry Brook was the next-best run producer with 17 on 14 balls. Jofra Archer bowled 2-21 but the other England bowlers combined for just 1-112.
Three more T20 matches remain in the series, scheduled for Tuesday in Rajkot, Friday in Pune and concluding on Feb. 2 in Wankhede before the sides launch a three-match ODI series on Feb. 6.
