Top seeded Lorenzo Musetti has the chance to make his second finals of 2024 in the Chengdu Open on Monday.

This summer has been the best run of top-seeded Lorenzo Musetti’s career. The 22-year-old Italian made it to the semifinals of Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics, both times meeting Novak Djokovic and falling short. He has the opportunity Monday to advance to his second final of the year in hopes of winning his first singles title on the ATP Tour since 2022. Musetti will face Alibek Kachmazov in the first match today, followed by Yannick Hanfmann taking on Shang Juncheng in the second semifinal in China. The winner advances on to play in the finals on Tuesday to crown the sixth Chengdu Open champion.

In the first five years of the Chengdu Open, Karen Khachanov (2016), Denis Istomin (2017), Bernard Tomic (2018), Pablo Carreno Busta (2019) and Alexander Zverev (2023) won the tournament. All four semifinalists would be first time finalists in this tournament.

This is the first time Musetti has played Kachmazov in an ATP event. Both are 22-years-old, with Musetti ranked 19th in the world and Kachmazov ranked 252nd overall. Looking ahead to potential finals matchups for Musetti, he is 1-1 in his career against Hanfmann, losing the most recent match. Musetti has never faced Juncheng in an ATP event.

In the second semifinal it is experience vs. youth with the 32-year-old Hanfmann facing the 19-year-old Juncheng. The two have never played in an ATP event, with Hanfmann looking for his first professional title. That’s the case for Juncheng too.
