England enters the final day of its Test with India needing 350 runs to complete a daunting chase at Leeds

India enters the final day of its 2025-27 International Cricket Council World Test Championship match at England needing to defend a 350-run lead at Headingly Cricket Ground in Leeds. The hosts got six overs into their second innings before play was called for the day on Monday without India taking a wicket. If successful, England would record its second-largest chase after it hunted down 378 runs three years ago to defeat the Indians in Birmingham in July 2022 to preserve a 2-2-1 draw in the Pataudi Trophy matches.

For as commanding a lead as India took, it managed just 31 between its last six wickets of its second innings, from 333/4 to 364 all out in just 71 balls. KL Rahul scored 137 (247) and Rishabh Pant added 118 (140) in the innings after India had three players hit the century mark in its first innings, when it took a 471-465 lead.

Josh Tongue bowled 3-72 while closing down the bottom of India’s order and Brydon Carse went 3-80. Leadoff batters Zak Crawley (12 not out) and Ben Duckett (nine not out) will resume batting when Tuesday’s session opens. England got 106 runs from Ollie Pope in its first innings and 99 from Harry Brook.

While also part of the World Test Championship, the teams are also vying for a new piece of hardware in this five-match series, the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Named for England fast bowler James Anderson and India batter Sachin Tendulkar, it replaces the Pataudi Trophy. The series continues July 2-6 at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, England, with additional tests set for July 10-14, July 23-27 and July 31-Aug. 4 on India’s tour.
