American Amanda Moll has the top pole vault in the world this year and leads a large group into the final on Wednesday.

Day 5 at the 2025 World Athletics Championship at National Stadium in Tokyo features an opportunity for the United States to start the day with its event-best seventh gold medal as American Amanda Moll leads a group of 14 competitors in the final of the women’s pole vault to start the day. Moll pulled off the top vault in the world this season when she cleared 16-feet-1 in Indianapolis on Feb. 28. Three other sets of medals are at stake on Wednesday with the men’s long jump, women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase and men’s 1,500 meters.

Three other Americans are in the women’s pole vault final in Kate Moon, Hana Moll and Sandi Morris. All of the competitors reached the final with an identical qualifying height of 15-feet-1. They will be joined in the final by Brazil’s Juliana de Menis Campos, Roberta Bruni of Italy, China’s Niu Chinge, Chechia’s Amálie Švábíková, Switzerland’s Angelica Moser, Tina Šutej of Slovenia, Eliza McCartney of New Zealand, France’s Marie-Julie Bonnin and New Zealand’s Olivia McTaggart.

Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou is ranked No. 1 in the world and has the top men’s long jump in the world this year at 27-foot-9 (8.46 meters). No. 2 Mattia Furlani of Italy leads the rest of the field, along with Simon Ehammer of Switzerland, Mingkun Zhang of China, Bulgaria’s Bozhidar Sarâboyukov, Thobias Montler of Sweden. American Isaac Grimes, Lester Lescay of Spain, Tajay Gayle of Jamaica, Jamaican Nikaoli Williams, Yuhao Shi of China and Spain’s Jaime Guerra.

Winfred Yavi of Bahrain tops the finalists in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase and has a world best of 8:45.25 this season. Four other top-five ranked competitors include Faith Cherotich of Kenya, Peruth Chemutai of Uganda, Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew and Norah Jeruto of Kazakhstan. In the men’s 1,500 meters qualifying heats, Niels Laros of Netherlands ran the top time in the men’s 1,500 meter qualifying heats at 3:35.50, just ahead of the duo of Josh Kerr (3:35.53) and Jake Wightman (3:35.56) of Great Britain. Jonah Koech is the lone American in the final after a heat time of 3:36.89
