Dutch outfit Feyenoord is targeting another Champions League upset as it stares down Inter Milan on Wednesday.

Only a fortnight after sending AC Milan tumbling out of the Champions League, Feyenoord takes on another Italian colossus in Inter Milan in the competition’s round of 16 seeking another giant-slaying. The Eredivisie outfit is enjoying its best run in Europe’s top-tier tournament since winning the title in 1970, but will be pushed to the limit by an Inter team on track to retain its Serie A title despite some recent slips. Simone Inzaghi’s side advanced to the last 16 after finishing fourth in the league phase but have gone four straight road fixtures without a win ahead of Wednesday’s trip to De Kuip.

A 1-0 win at home to Milan was enough to steer Feyenoord past the knockout playoffs in the last round, with in-demand winger Igor Paixao securing the spoils on that occasion.

A dramatic leveller against the 10-man Rossoneri in the reverse leg wrapped up a 2-1 aggregate victory, although Inter will pose a different level of threat altogether.

Danish midfielder Philip Billing picked an opportune moment to score his first Serie A goal on Sunday when he converted an 87th-minute equalizer at home to Inter.

Federico Dimarco’s opener kept the Nerazzurri in front for more than an hour, only for Billing – who’s on loan from Bournemouth – to devastate the title chasers at the death.

That extended Inter’s winless run to four away games on the bounce, although one of those came against nemesis Milan and so was only a road match in the official sense.

Still, it bodes well for a Feyenoord side that’s undefeated in five at De Kuip, even if new coach Robin van Persie did suffer a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to NEC in Saturday’s debut.

The Manchester United and Arsenal icon is ravaged by absences at present with no fewer than 13 players potentially missing, including the suspended Givairo Read.
