Arsenal has no choice but to beat Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday if it’s to reach a first Champions League final in 19 years.

Paris Saint-Germain carries a 1-0 aggregate lead into the second leg of its Champions League semifinal against Arsenal, who needs a win at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday if it’s to advance. The Gunners haven’t contested a Champions League decider since 2006, but the wheels appear to be falling off the bus at exactly the wrong time after going their last three games without a win. Ligue 1 champion PSG has also hit something of a sticky patch after winning just one of its last four games in all competitions, but even a draw will be enough to book the club’s second final appearance in Europe’s elite tournament.

Arsenal is 90 minutes from potentially cementing its fifth straight season without a major trophy unless it can win in Paris to at least force extra time against Luis Enrique’s men.

Mikel Arteta has been exalted for his work in north London, but after seeing his title aspirations crumble in the Premier League and cup competitions, Europe remains the last chance saloon for his side.

PSG is praying Ballon d’Or hopeful Ousmane Dembele will be fit to feature in the second leg after he left Arsenal crestfallen with his 1-0 decider at the Emirates Stadium last month.

The France international has been unstoppable this season and accumulated 33 goals and 12 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions – an average of one direct goal contribution per game.

Arteta has some worrying fitness concerns of his own, with captain Martin Odegaard in a race against time to be ready for the trip to Paris, along with defenders Jurrien Timber and Riccard Calafiori.

Arsenal’s only previous trip to the Parc des Princes ended in a 1-1 draw during the group stage of the 2016-17 Champions League, where Marco Verratti and Olivier Giroud each saw red.

More than eight years on and the stakes are a lot higher in the penultimate round of the competition, though PSG will benefit having been able to rest key stars since clinching yet another Ligue 1 crown.
