Porto and Manchester United will meet for the first time in 15 years as the Europa League campaign continues to tick over.

After starting this season’s Europa League with major disappointment at home to FC Twente, Manchester United is in a perilous state as its prepares to visit Portuguese powerhouse Porto. These two clubs haven’t met since the Red Devils triumphed 2-1 at the Estadio do Dragao back in April 2009, but host Porto may well deserve favorite status this time around given how the tables have turned since then. Six months have passed since the Dragons last recorded a defeat in front of their own fans, while Erik ten Hag’s men are hoping to escape a desperate downward spiral of three games without a win.

As if sharing the spoils at home to Twente wasn’t bad enough, United capitulated once more in front of its own fans when Tottenham Hotspur visited in their return to the Premier League on Sunday.

Bruno Fernandes’ first-half dismissal set the tone for both teams, though Spurs already led prior to the United captain’s departure in a performance all around Old Trafford would sooner forget:

And just like that, Ten Hag finds himself in an all too familiar position as his job appears to be at risk once more, and Porto will prove no pushover in the hunt for European glory.

The Primeira Liga giant lost to Norwegian upstart Bodo/Glimt in its own Europa League opener and will be equally desperate to restore some equilibrium back on home soil.

Vitor Bruno’s side have already half-succeeded in that sense after battering Arouca 4-0 on Sunday, when summer signing Samu Omorodion scored his fifth goal in four games.
