Cristiano Ronaldo hopes to bag Portugal a spot in the UEFA Nations League final when the country faces Germany on Wednesday.

Soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo returns to international duty on Wednesday as his Portugal side travels to Germany for a semifinal showdown of salivating proportions. Just days after the European club calendar came to a conclusion with Portugal’s triumph in the Champions League final, the international window reopens and some of the continental elite duke it out for a place in the Munich final. And both Germany and Portugal have the benefit of already being based in the city, as they collide at the Allianz Arena, potentially just 90 minutes away from reaching the decider in what will be a clash of titans.

Both Germany and Portugal topped their pools in Group A3 and Group A1, respectively, seeing off Italy and Denmark to reach the final four of this rotation.

Ronaldo’s side was christened as the inaugural winners of the Nations League back in 2019, while Die Mannschaft is hoping to reach the conclusive final match for the first time.

Portugal beat Denmark 5-2 in March to bank a spot in the Nations League semifinals, but needed extra-time to do so after losing the away leg of that quarterfinal 1-0.

Ronaldo was back on the score sheet at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, but it was two goals from Francisco Trincao in the latter stages that really sealed the deal.

Germany’s 5-4 aggregate win over Italy was only slightly more conclusive by comparison despite the Azzurri striking back from three goals down to draw 3-3 in Dortmund two months ago.

Both Borussia Monchengladbach’s Tim Kleindienst and Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala scored in that stalemate second leg, though neither are back with the squad following injuries.

Germany is also without Real Madrid center back Antonio Rüdiger, Arsenal forward Kai Havertz and Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck.

Portugal, meanwhile, has four newly crowned European champions in PSG quartet Vitinha, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes and Goncalo Ramos, who return to the scene of Saturday’s triumph just days later.

However, some of the bigger names missing from Roberto Martinez’s squad include Joao Cancelo, Matheus Nunes and Otavio, Ronaldo’s club teammate at Saudi side Al-Nassr.
