England ventured to the semi-finals of the inaugural Nations League but finished No. 3 in their group in the most recent edition of the competition.
Hungary opened the scoring when these teams drew 1-1 in World Cup qualifying last autumn, but a second-half salvo of goals saw Southgate’s side walk away as 4-0 winners at Wembley the previous month.
England has six Nations League matches between now and the World Cup later this year, meaning the games are both competitive spectacle and vital chances to experiment with change.
One all but certain to feature is captain Harry Kane, who needs just five more goals to overtake Wayne Rooney as England’s top scorer, despite having 50 or so caps fewer than the former Manchester United star.
Hungary has no major injury concerns but failed to beat England since the maiden meeting in 1952, losing 10 of the 12 encounters in the last 70 years.
