Hungary makes its way to Turkey on Thursday for the first leg of a crucial UEFA Nations League playoff decider.

A place in the top rung of the UEFA Nations League will be on the line when Turkey hosts Hungary on Thursday for the first leg of a promotion playoff between two teams desperate to be part of Europe’s elite. Hungary finished third in its Nations League group to force a relegation playoff against the Crescent Stars, who placed second in Group B4 last year after just missing out on automatic promotion. Hungary enjoyed back-to-back promotions in the first two editions of the Nations League and has enjoyed top-flight status ever since but now needs the right results to retain its place among the continent’s upper echelons.

Turkey can ascend to League A for the first time if it manages to book the right results over the next three days, with Hungary set to host Sunday’s second-leg showdown in Budapest.

But first the Crescent Stars will attempt to extend a home undefeated streak that dates back to March 2023 when Croatia was the last visiting team to emerge from Turkey with a win.

However, it’s been more than a decade since Vincenzo Montella’s side lost a competitive fixture in Istanbul, with its last meaningful defeat in the capital coming against the Czech Republic in 2014.

That’s a lengthy duck for Hungary to break, especially after the Magyars managed to win just one of their six outings in Group A3 last year.

Liverpool playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai scored one of the best goals of his international career during a clash against the Turks, firing a missile in off the post from around 40 yards.

The last three meetings between Turkey and Hungary have gone in favor of Rossi & Co, including home and away wins in the 2020-21 edition of the Nations League.

A repeat of that doubleheader would be enough to preserve the Magyars’ place in League A, though Turkey’s terrifying record in Istanbul could be one obstacle too many.
