Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman makes his long-awaited return to the Octagon against Joaquin Buckley on Saturday.

Joaquin Buckley is targeting the biggest result of his career to date when he squares off against former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman at the State Farm Arena on Saturday. More than 18 months after his majority-decision defeat to Khamzat Chimaev, Usman returns to the cage in the hopes of ending a three-loss skid, though he’ll have to overcome one of the more in-form fighters on the UFC roster to do so. Buckley, 31, has won six on the bounce in the 170lb division and collected four finishes during that run as he looks to launch his own claim on the welterweight belt.

And while 38-year-old Usman gets back to business following a lengthy lay-off, Buckley hopes to carry on his momentum after notching no fewer than four wins over the course of 2024.

Not that such activity is anything new to Buckley, who has had 15 fights in the UFC since making his promotional debut in August 2020.

‘New Mansa’ is on the rise and heads into their showdown as the favorite, not that he needs reminding given the confidence he has displayed ahead of his clash against the former champ:

There was a time when Usman felt untouchable after enjoying a 19-win streak, though that’s no longer case following consecutive losses to Leon Edwards and his narrow defeat to Chimaev.

And ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ isn’t the only former titleholder lined up on Saturday’s main card, with ex-flyweight champion Rose Namajunas facing off against Miranda Maverick in the co-main.

That’s in addition to former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt’s face-off against Raoni Barcelos more than a year since his last fight, a submission loss to Deiveson Figueiredo.

The main portion of UFC Atlanta will see Alonzo Menifield take on Oumar Sy at light heavyweight, followed by a middleweight matchup between Mansur Abdul-Malik and Cody Brundage.

Andre Petroski is also looking to continue his momentum at 185lbs as he seeks a fourth straight decision win when he squares off against Edmen Shahbazyan.
