One of the best, if not the best striker in the world currently has been performing at a top level with a pretty significant injury. Bayern Munich have announced that star forward Robert Lewandowski is set to go under the knife to repair a groin issue that has plagued the Polish talisman.

You would never know by looking at the stats that Lewandowski has an injury that requires surgery. The 31-year-old leads the Bundesliga in scoring with 19 goals to go along with 10 more in the Champions League.

The procedure is thankfully not one expected to keep the striker out of action for too long, if at all. It was strategically planned by Bayern to take place after their match against Wolfsburg and during the league’s winter break that extends from December 22 to January 17.

“Robert will have the operation straight after the match,” Bayern interim manager Hansi Flick told Bundesliga.com. “We don’t want to lose any time. We’ll have to wait and see how the procedure goes, but he should be out of action for between 10 and 14 days.”

Bayern cannot afford to lose their most important player for any length of time as they find themselves in an extremely close title race. The German top flight is as wide open as we’ve seen in quite a long time. The Bavarian side is guaranteed to be trailing in the table during the winter break as they enter the final matchday before the rest period four points behind leaders RB Leipzig.
