A Chelsea supporter has been arrested for alleged racial abuse aimed at Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min during the Blues’ 2-0 win in north London on Sunday.
It appeared to be home fans who were guilty of racist abuse at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger indicated he was the victim of monkey chants after his side went ahead.
Referee Anthony Taylor stopped the game on three occasions, while warnings were also read out over the PA system.
Rudiger appeared to be targeted after he played a role in the sending off of Son, who kicked out at the Germany defender from the floor and was shown a straight red. However, Spurs released a statement saying their investigation thus far had been “inconclusive.”
The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg wrote that a Chelsea fan was ejected and later arrested for a “racially aggravated public order offence” believed to be aimed at Son, though the South Korean is not thought to have heard any of the insults.
It’s mentioned the Chelsea supporter was identified by other fans of the west London club prior to his ejection.
Tottenham’s statement said the club had “spent many hours reviewing CCTV footage” but that no culprits had been identified yet in regards to the alleged Rudiger abuse.
Sky News reported Tottenham have employed lip readers to help them identify wrongdoers, while Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen said he and his team “don’t identify with these people.”
