Happy Fourth of July from fuboTV everyone! We couldn’t think of a better way to spend the day then watching baseball and fireworks after. Well, maybe the hot dog eating competition could give it a run for its money. Regardless, there is a great lineup of baseball this holiday weekend and it all concludes with the Subway Series when the New York Mets travel to the Bronx to finish their series with the New York Yankees. The first game of this series was postponed but Sunday Night Baseball will be the conclusion of a double-header to make it all up.

The Mets won in convincing fashion in the first game of the year between these two when they recorded 14 hits compared to the Yankees three. After bouncing around last year with the Mariners and Blue Jays, Taijuan Walker seems to have found a home in the Mets rotation for the foreseeable future. Walker only gave up two hits and after Jacob DeGrom and Michael Stroman, the Mets are developing a exciting pitching staff even with Noah Syndergaard still out because of Tommy John surgery.
While the Yankees and Mets have very similar records, their fortunes for the playoffs are looking very different. That’s because of the disparity between the NL East and the AL East. If the season ended today, the Yankees would finish in fourth place in their granted very difficult division. The Red Sox are on a surge and apparently in only matters if Alex Corra is their skipper or not. The Rays still look like the team that made the World Series last year even though they lost several key pitchers. Then there are the Blue Jays who are punching way above their weight even though they have an incredibly young lineup.
The Mets only have one more win than the Yankees and they are leading their division. Everyone but the Marlins is flirting with the .500 mark and this division still seems like anyone’s division. The Mets need to keep the pressure up on the Yankees and get some wins on the road where they have been dismal. They are red hot at Citi Field with a 24-11 record but are 18-25 away from Queens. The Mets will start Corey Oswalt for Sunday Night Baseball.
Oswalt has a good story this year as he was designated for assignment before the season began but made his season debut in late June. He hasn’t made any starts this season as he’s mostly be in relief but he’s kept a respectable 1.42 ERA with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings so far. The Yankees will use a similar approach in this one. It will be interesting to see which relief pitcher has the better start for their respective New York team.
While the first game of the Sunday double-header featured a tremendous pitching duel, the second game matchup shouldn’t be slept on. First going for the Yankees is Nestor Cortes Jr. He has gotten off to a tremendous start for the Yanks as Cortes Jr. will be getting his first nationally televised start. He’s had seven games of relief, he’s had a 1.02 ERA in 17.2 innings.
Because of the several delays (the Yankees game Thursday against the Angels was also postponed) Cortes Jr. will get a tremendous opportunity to start. While the Yankees will see what potential he has as a starter, expect this stint by Cortes to be a opener type of situation and bullpen day for the Yanks. Both teams need to step up if they are going to make it to the playoffs. Who will be the one to rise out of the Subway Series?
