Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly agreed to a new contract ‘in principle’ with defender Marquinhos, which will keep the Brazil international at the club until at least 2024.
L’Equipe reported (via Get French Football News) Marquinhos is on the verge of signing a two-year extension to his current deal, which is due to expire in the summer of 2022.
It was reported earlier in December that Real Madrid and Manchester City were keeping tabs on the South American in the event he could leave the Parc des Princes, per Le10Sport (via Football Espana).
The 25-year-old has made 269 appearances in Paris since joining the club from Roma in 2013, just 21 fewer than teammate Edinson Cavani, who sits 10th in the all-time PSG appearances list.
Marquinhos has been a crucial linchpin in the French capital for a number of seasons, fulfilling roles in central defence—and more recently midfield—during a key period of growth for the club.
Thomas Tuchel has taken to using Marquinhos more regularly as a midfield anchor in the past 18 months, a sign of the versatility that’s helped provide the team with a secure spine.
There were suggestions the two parties had reached an impasse over salary demands, though any financial concerns now look to be resolved.
Marquinhos will be 30 by the time his impending new deal will reach its expiration, ensuring PSG should retain his services deep into the prime years of his career.
