Former Spain manager Robert Moreno has been appointed Monaco manager shortly after Leonardo Jardim left the helm for a second time in 14 months.
Monaco made an announcement via their official website confirming Jardim had been relieved of his duties again, having fired him to make way for Thierry Henry in October 2018.
Get French Football News cited a report from Monaco-Matin that said Jardim and his three assistants will receive a total pay-off worth €8 million ($9 million).
Moreno, 42, will take on his first senior top-flight club coaching role not long after he parted ways with Spain’s national team. A statement from Monaco welcomed their new manager:
“We believe a lot in him and his capacities to make this team a success. We wish him a warm welcome to AS Monaco.”
The former assistant to Luis Enrique took over as Spain manager in June when the latter’s nine-year-old daughter, Xana—who died in August—was battling a form of bone cancer. However, Enrique did not retain Moreno when he returned in November and suggested his ‘disloyal’ former No. 2 wanted to lead the team into Euro 2020, per The Guardian.
Monaco—who won Ligue 1 under Jardim in 2017, their first top-flight crown in 17 years—sit seventh after hammering Lille 5-1 on December 21, the Portuguese tactician signing off on a high note at least.
The French Riviera outfit are unbeaten in four league games and have won seven straight top-flight matches at home, but the move to appoint Moreno during the winter break signals a shift in belief.
