In the year we haven’t been able to go anywhere, about the closest thing we can get to traveling to a tropical island is tuning into the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Even getting a glimpse of this tournament set in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii will be a mental break from the blistering January cold.
More importantly though, the tournament is the signal that the PGA Tour offseason is officially over. The Sentry Tournament will be the first in 2021 and hopefully it’s a year with a renewed hope of a full season after so many disruptions last year. Here’s to a fresh start in 2021.

Usually the Sentry is open to those who won a tournament in the previous calendar year. With all of the unpredictability COVID-19 brought to the sport in 2020, this year’s version will be expanded. Â The top 30 players who qualified for the 2020 TOUR Championship will also be invited to the Plantation course. This expansion is only set to last for this year’s tournament and will go back to the old qualifying rules next year. Â
Last year’s winner was Justin Thomas who fended off Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele in a playoff. All three players are within the top 10 favored to win the tournament. Thomas along with Jon Rahm are tied for second best odds to win the whole thing. Thomas is a familiar favorite and is very comfortable at this course winning this tournament twice in 2020 and in 2017 beating out Hideki Matsuyama.
The other tournament Thomas won last year was also his second FedEx St. Jude Invitational. On top of those wins, he had a strong 2020 overall finishing fourth at the Masters and hasn’t finished outside of the top-12 since last August at the BMW Championship.
About the only player that can top that momentum playing in this tournament is Dustin Johnson. Of course, he won that Masters tournament that was still so weird to watch in November but that didn’t stop his dominance winning in Augusta by five strokes. Johnson has won the Sentry Tourney before in 2018 and is the betting favorite in this event. On top of winning his second major, he also won the TOUR Championship over Thomas. 2020 didn’t stop Johnson. There’s little reason to think 2021 will slow him down either.
