The spring football dynasty known as the Birmingham Stallions open their quest for a fourth consecutive championship on Sunday afternoon when they visit the D.C. Defenders at Audi Field in Washington. Birmingham won both USFL titles in 2022 and 2023 before claiming the inaugural United Football League crown last season after the USFL merged with the XFL. The Defenders, meanwhile, were shaken by a late coaching change when 2023 XFL Coach of the Year Reggie Barlow left to take over the Tennessee State program on March 23. Quarterbacks coach Shannon Harris takes over as inteirm head coach.

The Stallions finished 9-1 before rolling to the championship and have been reunited with quarterback Alex McGough, who led Birmingham to USFL titles in 2022 and 2023 and was the USFL MVP in his final season. He spent two seasons with the Green Bay Packers practice squad before coming back to the Stallions in January. His top weapons will be Amari Rodgers, Jace Sternberger and Deon Cain.

Jordan Ta’amu is back for a third season at quarterback for D.C., which finished 4-6 last season after losing the XFL Championship in 2023. The Defenders bring back both of their All-UFL selections from 2024, cornerback Deandre Baker and wide receiver/return specialist Chris Rowland.

Skip Holtz has coached Birmingham since the brand was revived in 2022 and is 26-4 in three seasons with a 6-0 postseason mark. Holtz also serves as offensive coordinator, with Corey Chamblin calling the defense. D.C. also lost offensive coordinator Fred Kaiss, who moved to Tennessee State with Barlow, while veteran coach Gregg Williams runs the Defender defense.
