San Antonio Brahmas come off a UFL championship game appearance as they open the new season against the Arlington Renegades.

Longtime NFL coach Wade Phillips engineered a turnaround last season as the San Antonio Brahmas moved from the XFL to the United Football League, a merger between the XFL and USFL, rival spring football circuits, for the 2024 season. The Brahmas finished 7-3, earned a playoff berth and picked up a road playoff victory before falling in the championship game. On Saturday, San Antonio visits the Arlington Renegades at Choctaw Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops returning for his fourth season with the Renegades after a 3-7 finish in 2024.

The Brahmas lost All-UFL guard Kohl Levao to the NFL’s New York Jets but return All-UFL inside linebacker Tavante Beckett to anchor the defense. Jontre Kirklin shared the league lead with 56 receptions in 2024 and former Texas A&M star Kellen Mond won the quarterback competition in training camp.

Luis Perez, who led the UFL with 2,307 passing yards and 18 touchdown passes last season, is back for Arlington, as are two of the team’s three All-UFL selections in cornerback Ajene Harris and punter Marquette King. Offensive tackle Bobby Evans did not re-sign with the team. Leading rusher De’Veon Smith, who had 451 yards and three TDs, is back for his third year with the Renegades.

Arlington brought back offensive coordinator Chuck Long and defensive coordinators Jay Hayes and Marvin Sanders, adding Chris Woods from Temple to coach the linebackers. San Antonio coordinators A.J. Smith (offense) and Will Reed (defense) are back. Marvin Williams Jr. shifts from running backs to offensive line with the departure of Andre Gurode and Jesse Thompson joins the staff from Japan’s Ritsumeikan University to coach running backs.
