Grand Canyon (22-6) remains a game behind Western Athletic Conference-leading Utah Valley despite a five-game winning streak. The Lopes are 12-2 in the WAC and on Thursday night, they welcome Utah Tech (6-23) to the Global Credit Union Credit Arena at GCU in Phoenix. The Trailblazers have dropped their last 12 games and are last in the WAC at 2-12. Grand Canyon has played in the last two NCAA tournaments, reaching the second round last season, while Utah Tech hasn’t qualified for the Big Dance since moving up from Division II in 2020.

The Lopes had an 18-point second-half lead cut to one before Makaih Williams hit a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to help secure a 63-60 win at Seattle on Saturday night. Duke Brennan finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds while JaKobe Coles added 13 points and 12 boards. With leading scorer Tyon Grant-Foster hobbled by an ankle injury, Coles is the team’s top scorer at 14.0 points per game, with Ray Harrison scoring 11.1 points a night and Brennan averaging 10.7 points and 9.5 rebounds.

The Trailblazers gave up the lead midway through the second half and never made it all the way back in a 61-57 loss to visiting California Baptist on Saturday night. Beon Riley finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Madiba Owona tossed in 10 points in the loss. Noa Gonsalves scores a team-high 14.3 points per game, with Riley averaging 13.6 points and 7.8 boards.

Utah Tech still leads the all-time series 13-12 after dropping their sixth straight game to Grand Canyon 79-66 at home on Jan. 25. Bryce Drew is 116-38 with three NCAA tournament appearances in his fifth season leading the Lopes while Jon Judkins is 325-191 in his 20th season with the Trailblazers. The school was known as Dixie State until 2022.
