No. 8 Vanderbilt takes on 9th-seeded Tennessee in the second round of the SEC tournament in women’s basketball on Thursday.

Vanderbilt (21-9) gets into action on Thursday morning at the SEC women’s basketball tournament, coming off its bye to take on ninth-seeded Tennessee (22-8) in the second round at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina. The No. 8 seed Commodores finished 8-8 in SEC play and won a head-to-head tiebreaker with the Lady Vols to get the first round bye. Tennessee advanced with a first round victory on Wednesday. Vanderbilt played in last season’s NCAA tournament, while the Lady Vols have appeared in all 42 NCAA tournaments and reached the second round last season.

Tennessee shook off a sluggish start and ran away from Texas A&M, the No. 16 seed, for a 77-37 blowout on Wednesday. Talaysia Cooper scored 19 points, while Jewel Spear and Zee Spearman added 11 each, with no one logging more than 23 minutes in the romp. Cooper leads the team at 16.8 points per game, with Spear getting 13.1 points a night and Spearman averaging 11.7 points and 5.9 rebounds.

The Commodores closed out their regular season with a 100-59 blowout at Missouri on Sunday afternoon. Mikayla Blakes went off for 29 points, Iyana Moore finished with 18 points, seven assists and four steals, and Khamil Pierre posted 16 points, 10 rebounds and six dimes. Blakes scores a team-high 23.3 points per game, with Pierre averaging 20.8 points and 9.6 boards.

The Lady Vols lead all-time 79-11 after Vanderbilt snapped an eight-game losing streak in the series with a 71-70 win at home on Jan. 19. The winner advances to face top-seeded and defending national champion South Carolina in a Friday quarterfinal matchup.
