England opened up World Cup group play with a 6-2 win over Iran. Five different players scored a goal for the English side in that contest, with Arsenal midfielder Bukayo Saka scoring twice.
Meanwhile, Wales played the United States in the first game and drew the USMNT 1-1. Wales looked overmatched at times, but LAFC winger Gareth Bale got a chance for a penalty kick and nailed it to draw the Welsh side even.
On the second day of World Cup group play, England and the USA met in a match that ended in a scoreless draw, while Wales was shut out in a surprising 2-0 loss to Iran. The game was tied 0-0 heading into stoppage time, but Iran managed goals at 90’+8′ and 90’+11′.
England is looking to advance out of the group stage for the second tournament in a row. The team has only dropped out in the opening stage once in the last six World Cups. Wales, meanwhile, is playing in its second World Cup ever. It made the quarterfinals in 1958.
