The Colorado Avalanche were five minutes away from taking a 3-0 series lead in against the Vegas Golden Knights. Ever since, they have dropped three straight and are on the verge of going home if they don't turn it around in Game 6 as the series heads back to Vegas. In Game 3 the Avs were up 2-1 with five minutes left even though the Golden Knights outplayed them in every facet especially in shots and blocked shots. The Avs proceeded to get all up in their feelings more than Drake after their coach called them out for a wasted performance and then proceeded to get dominated 5-1 in Game 4.

The good news for Avs fans heading into Game 5 was that they were coming home where they hadn't lost all playoffs. The team certainly took advantage, looking like their old selves moving with much more speed than the last three games and creating much more scoring chances. They got a fluke goal with less than one second in the first period when Marc Andre-Fleury made a rare misstep and missed a glove save but if you were a Colorado fan, you had to be happy with their chances because a lesser goal tender would have gave up many more goals. That's why they were leading 2-0 after the second period. That's the last time the Avs had the wheels attached to their vehicle toward a 3-2 series lead.

Instead the Avs shot themselves in the foot and gave up two goals to tie the game off of turnovers that are just inexcusable. The momentum was sucked out of the Ball Arena in Denver and you just knew that the Golden Knights were going to win it. That was later confirmed when the game went to the first minute of overtime and Vegas netted the game winner. There seems to be no wind in Colorado's sails and as this series shifts to Vegas, it's hard to imagine how they will get enough momentum back to force a Game 7 back in Colorado.

Mark Stone has been Vegas' best player all season and that didn't change in Game 5 as he scored the game winner. All Vegas has to do to clinch a spot in the semis against Montreal is continue their formula of slowing down the Avs in the neutral zone. They have all but eliminated Nathan MacKinnon from this series who was nominated as a Hart Trophy finalist today. That's no small feat and goalie Philipp Grubauer is going to have to stand on his head if they have any shot of winning this game and extending the series. The Avalanche's woes in the second round seem to be in full effect.
