Where To Watch MLB Opening Day: 2023

MLB season is back! Find out when and where to watch the MLB opening day and this season’s live games with the 2023 schedule- plus important season highlights.

When Is MLB 2023 Opening Day?

MLB Opening Day is on Thursday, Mar. 30, 2023, with all 30 teams in Major League Baseball set to hit the diamond on that day, the first time since 1968 that every team in the league has played on Opening Day. This MLB season brings with it a host of rules changes that are designed to create a more dynamic game, including a pitch timer, larger bases and the elimination of the shift. Pitchers will now be on the clock when they’re on the mound, with 15 seconds to throw if the bases are empty and 20 seconds if a runner is on base. Failure to throw before the clock expires will result in a ball. There is also a 30-second timer between batters now, and a batter who is not in the batter’s box before the pitch clock hits eight seconds will be given a strike.

The elimination of the shift is also expected to be a way to speed up the game. Teams must now have four infielders at all times, and those infielders must play at their assigned positions, with two players required to be on each side of second base. Infielders are also required to have both feet in the infield dirt.

The change in base size is for safety reasons, not for the purposes of speeding up the game. Home plate won’t change, but the other three bases will increase from 15 square inches to 18 square inches.

This year’s MLB schedule also features a notable change from years past, as all 30 MLB teams will play each other during the regular season. Interleague play has been around for decades now, but it’s never reached this level before. This change is expected to help with competitive balance in MLB. Teams will play a four-game home-and-home series against their geographic interleague rivals as well.

The 2022 World Series champion Houston Astros highlight the Opening Day schedule, as they’ll play host to the Chicago White Sox in a game that will air on ESPN at 7:00 PM. Can Houston be the first team to win back-to-back World Series since the New York Yankees won three in a row from 1998 to 2000? Of the 15 games on Opening Day, 10 of those games feature division rivals playing, offering those teams a chance to get an early jump in the battle for division titles.
