The Mercury and Valkyries square off in preseason action in Phoenix on Sunday.

After coming down to the wire in a one-point Sparks victory in their first preseason matchup, the Golden State Valkyries square off against the Phoenix Mercury at the Footprint Center on Sunday. Golden State is the first expansion team to join the WNBA since the 2008 season. The Valkyries are owned and operated by the same ownership group as the Golden State Warriors. The Valkyries then hired Natalie Nakase from the Aces as the franchise’s first head coach. Golden State then added several veterans in the expansion draft and free agency like Kate Martin, Tiffany Hayes, Kayla Thornton, and Monique Billings. Phoenix, on the other hand, is moving on to life without Diana Taurasi who retired this offseason.

Most recently, the Valkyries fell in their first preseason game to the Sparks by a final score of 83-82 on Tuesday night in San Francisco. Laeticia Amihere scored 20 points in just over 19 minutes on 7-for-11 shooting while Thornton and Billings added nine points each in the loss.

As for Phoenix, the Mercury opened the preseason with a 85-84 loss to the Aces in Las Vegas on Tuesday night. Kathryn Westbeld and Satou Sabally tied for a team-high 14 points while Sabally added five rebounds. Alexis Prince was also in double figures with 10 points.
