Sabrina Ionescu and the Liberty continue their road trip with a game against Satou Sabally and the Mercury on Friday night.

The Liberty (11–3) will arrive in downtown Phoenix on Friday night for a matchup against the Mercury at PHX Arena. The team has been strong overall, but has split its last five games. Without Jonquel Jones, out due to a re-aggravated ankle injury, the team is trying to find a rhythm and consistency. Jones’ absence leaves New York vulnerable on the boards and around the rim which is problematic as those are areas where Breanna Stewart (21 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.2 BPG) and Natasha Cloud (6.5 APG) are not nearly as strong.

Phoenix (11–4) has been rolling and brings a five-game win streak into Friday night’s cross-conference battle. The team has been dominating the Western Conference recently and will look to keep its win streak going on Friday night. With Satou Sabally leading the offense (19.3 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 2.6 APG) and Alyssa Thomas assisting to offense, the Mercury are firing on all cylinders. Rookie Lexi Held has provided a reliable scoring punch off the bench (8.7 PPG in 20.7 MPG), but suffered a partially collapsed lung and is out indefinitely.

The teams met just last weekend and saw the Mercury earn an 89-81 victory in New York after capitalizing on their hot shooting and superior frontcourt cohesion. New York’s elite defense, allowing around 77 PPG (3rd in WNBA), will be put to the test by Phoenix, which averages 82–89 PPG in this winning stretch.

This game will boil down to depth and adjustments made for those players out with injury on both sides. Can the Liberty survive without Jones? Can Steward and Ionescu maintain offensive balance? Phoenix will aim to exploit New York’s weakened paint defense with Sabally, Thomas and contributing vets like Kahleah Copper.

Fans can expect a high-tempo, tightly-contested back-and-forth. Tune in Friday night to catch the action in Phoenix.
