The Golden State Valkyries begin preseason play against the Los Angeles Sparks in their inaugural season on Tuesday.

With the WNBA welcoming a new expansion team for the first time since 2008, the Golden State Valkyries begin preseason play against the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday night.

As the 13th team to enter the WNBA in their inaugural season, the Valkyries are owned and operated by the same ownership group that runs the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. The Valkyries will play their home games at San Francisco’s Chase Center like the seven-time NBA champs, while the team’s personnel will be run by Ohemma Nyanin. Nyanin was the defending WNBA champion Liberty’s assistant general manager last season. The Valkyries added Tiffany Hayes, Kayla Thornton and Monique Billings in the expansion draft. Los Angeles, on the other hand, is looking to bounce back from a rough 2024 campaign where it finished 8-32.

After struggling last season, the Sparks moved on from head coach Curt Miller despite having an injury-depleted roster last season. Lynne Roberts will take over for Miller on LA’s bench, bringing a modern flare to the Sparks offense from the University of Utah. The Sparks also added Olympian Kelsey Plum this offseason. The second overall pick in the 2024 draft, Cameron Brink, is also expected back from a torn ACL at some point in 2025.

Along with adding three veterans in the expansion draft, the Valkyries also selected rising stars Jlue Vanloo, Kate Martin and Temi Fagbenle to fill out their roster. Golden State is prepared to turn the Valkyries into a successful WNBA franchise, with the full backing from their NBA squad.

The Sparks and Valkyries open WNBA preseason play in San Francisco on Tuesday night.
