Alyssa Thomas visits the Connecticut Sun for the first time as a member of the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday.

For the first time in her career Alyssa Thomas walks into the Mohegan Sun Arena as a visiting player. Thomas leads her new squad, the Phoenix Mercury (8-4), on the road against the Connecticut Sun (2-8) on Wednesday. She played 11 seasons for the Sun. During Thomas’ tenure with Connecticut she was a five-time All-Star, three-time All-WNBA selection and led the team to the WNBA Finals twice. This season Thomas is having one of the best seasons of her career despite missing a handful of games early on. She is one of just two players in the WNBA this season averaging at least 14 points, nine assists and six rebounds per game, along with the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark.

Since returning from injury Thomas has led Phoenix to back-to-back wins. She has been a playmaking machine in these two games, dishing out 23 assists. Overall this season Phoenix is 6-1 in the seven games Thomas has played in and is just 2-3 without the All-Star.

For Connecticut this season the team hit the reset button. They moved on from all five starters from last season in Thomas, DeWanna Bonner, DiJonai Carrington, Tasha Harris and Brionna Jones.

This season the veteran duo of Marina Mabrey and Tina Charles have led the team during this transition. Mabrey is averaging a career-high 17.6 points per game as a full-time starter. Rookie Saniya Rivers has made an impact through eight games as well, averaging 7.1 points, 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
