Alyssa Thomas leads the Phoenix Mercury on the road against Chelsea Gray and the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday.

The Phoenix Mercury (7-4) close out the Commissioner’s Cup and kick-off a four-game road trip against the short-handed Las Vegas Aces (5-4) on Sunday. So far through the first five games in the Commissioner’s Cup Phoenix is 3-2 and Las Vegas is 2-2. Neither team is in a position to win the Commissioner’s Cup, but are coming off wins to stay competitive in the Western Conference. Alyssa Thomas returned for Phoenix, leading the team to a win with 11 points and 10 assists. With Thomas back in the fold, Phoenix has its MVP candidate alongside All-Star Satou Sabally. On the other side for Las Vegas it is playing its second game this season without three-time MVP A’ja Wilson, who is in concussion protocol.

Las Vegas responded well without Wilson in the lineup for just the third game in six seasons. Jackie Young led the way with 28 points going 11-of-11 from the free throw line in the comeback win. Jewell Loyd played maybe her best game of the season for Las Vegas.

Loyd finished the game with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting (5-of-8 from three). That was Loyd’s season-high in points and just her second game scoring 20 or more points. With Wilson out of the lineup it opens up more opportunity for Young, Loyd and Chelsea Gray to build some chemistry.

For Phoenix this season it is 5-1 with Thomas in the lineup and 2-3 in five games without the five-time All-Star.
