The WNBA semifinals matchup between the top-seed Minnesota Lynx and the No. 4 seed Phoenix Mercury has all the makings of a classic beginning on Sunday. Both teams are led by MVP candidates and deserving winners. Napheesa Collier has led Minnesota all season as the most efficient offensive player in the WNBA and anchor of the second-best defense in the league. Alyssa Thomas has earned her nickname of “The Engine” with nine triple-doubles this season for Phoenix in her first season with the team. Minnesota felt some angst in the first round, but ultimately swept the expansion Golden State Valkyries. Phoenix needed three games and a great fourth quarter to turn the lights out on the reigning champions in the first round.

In the first round of the playoffs, Collier displayed her MVP candidacy by averaging 22 points, 6.5 rebounds and three assists per game on 63 percent shooting. 

Thomas was spectacular in Game 3 for Phoenix, finishing with 20 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists, and two steals. This season, Phoenix is 8-1 when Thomas registers a triple-double, winning by an average of 13.1 points per game.
