Minnesota trailed the Phoenix Mercury (0-1) by seven points at the half before turning on the jets for the 82-69 win. Collier, who finished second in MVP for the second straight season, finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. The backcourt came to play for Minnesota, led by Courtney Williams with 23 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and five steals. Williams is the first player since Sheryl Swoopes to put those stats in a playoff game.

Kayla McBride also caught fire for Minnesota in Game 1. She finished with 21 points and six rebounds on 4-9 shooting from three. That was McBride’s seventh 20-plus point playoff game of her career. Minnesota is 8-1 when McBride scores 20 or more points this season.

They did nearly all of their damage inside or at the free-throw line with 84% of their points coming in those two ways. As a team, Phoenix shot 3-23 from three in the loss. This season, Phoenix is 19-121 (15.7%) from three against Minnesota between the regular season and playoffs.
