As two of the more active teams reconfiguring their rosters this offseason, the Phoenix Mercury open the WNBA season by hosting the Seattle Storm at PHX Arena in Arizona on Saturday. 

Starting with Phoenix, the Mercury are moving on to life without star Diana Taurasi after the future Hall of Famer retired this offseason. The Mercury picked up several notable additions in Alyssa Thomas, Satou Sabally and Kalani Brown this offseason but will be down several key rotation players to begin the season. Seattle, on the other hand, surprisingly traded homegrown star Jewell Loyd this offseason to Las Vegas. The Storm selected French forward Dominique Malonga with the second-overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. Malonga is considered to be a phenom after leading France to a silver medal in the last Olympics.

Most recently, Phoenix dropped both its preseason contests with an 84-79 loss in the Mercury’s preseason finale to Golden State on Sunday. The Mercury were led by 15 points each from Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally, while Natasha Mack added 12 points and seven rebounds in the loss. 

As for Seattle, the Storm won their only preseason tuneup in a 79-59 victory over the Sun. Nneka Ogwumke finished with a game-high 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field. Ogwumke sank four three-pointers in the win, while Li Yueru added 15 points and rebounds.
