    The second semifinal of the day in the WNBA pits the second-seeded Minnesota Lynx and the third-seeded Connecticut Sun. Both teams swept their first-round series against the Phoenix Mercury and Indiana Fever respectively, setting up this duel between the last two MVP runner-ups. Napheesa Collier, this season’s MVP runner-up has been the best player in the playoffs through the first round going for 80 total points, including a WNBA playoff record-tying 42 points in her last game. On the other side for Connecticut, it has seen last season’s MVP runner-up Alyssa Thomas activate playoff mode, nearly averaging a triple-double through her first two games setting up an exciting semifinal match-up starting today in Game 1.

    Thomas dominated the first round of the playoffs sending Indiana and Caitlin Clark home. In those two games, she averaged 15.5 points, 13.0 assists and 7.5 rebounds per game with a triple-double in the first game of the series. She is on a mission to get Connecticut back to the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2022 and win the franchise’s first championship.

    Alongside Thomas for Connecticut are DeWanna Bonner, Brionna Jones, DiJonai Carrington and newcomer Marina Mabrey. In the playoffs, Bonner has found her scoring touch again, averaging 18.5 points per game while Mabrey has been a flamethrower, leading the team with 22.0 points per game on four made three-pointers per game.

    For Minnesota this season, the team is built on defense and three-point shooting around Collier. The balance this season has Minnesota eyeing a championship run for the first time since 2017 when it won a fourth championship in seven years. Kayla McBride, Alanna Smith, Courtney Williams, Bridget Carleton, Natisha Hiedeman and Myisha Hines-Allen give Minnesota the deepest team in the playoffs around an MVP candidate heading into the semifinals.
