No. 16 West Virginia comes off its double-bye for a Friday Big 12 quarterfinal clash with No. 20 Kansas State

No. 20 Kansas State (26-6), the fifth seed at the Big 12 Conference tournament, advanced with a second-round victory on Thursday and will take on the No. 4 seed, No. 16 West Virginia (23-6), in a quarterfinal matchip on Friday morning at T-Mobile Arena in Kansas City. The Wildcats, with preseason conference Player of the Year Ayoka Lee sidelined since missing the last 13 games with a foot injury, have gone 8-5 during that stretch. K-State was an NCAA tournament team last season while the Mountaineers have reached the last two NCAA tourneys, reaching the second round last season.

The Wildcats trailed just once in their 80-65 second-round win over 13th-seeded UCF on Thursday. Serena Sundell scored 21 points with Zyanna Walker adding 13 in the victory. With Lee sidelined, Sundell is the team’s top scorer at 13.7 points per game and also is second in the nation with 7.0 assists a night. Temira Poindexter gets 12.4 points per outing and Kennedy Taylor averages 6.7 points and 4.7 rebounds.

West Virginia closed the regular season with back-to-back wins, finishing with an 85-69 victory at Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon. JJ Quinerly went off for 31 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while Jordan Harrison finished with 21 points and four steals. Quinerly nets 20.5 points per game, Harrison adds 13.4 points a contest and Kyah Watson averages 6.0 points and 7.7 boards.

The Mountaineers are 19-9 all-time in the series after a 70-57 win at home on Feb. 17. Mark Kellogg is 48-14 in his second season at West Virginia while Jeff Mittie has a 216-141 mark in his 11th season at Kansas State. The winner takes on the winner of Friday’s second semifinal between No. 9 seed Colorado and top-seeded TCU in a Saturday semifinal.
