Eighth-ranked TCU (28-3) won its first Big 12 Conference regular-season title this season, going 16-2 in conference play, and on Friday opens its Big 12 tournament against No. 9 seed Colorado (20-11) in a quarterfinal game at T-Mobile Arena in Kansas City. The Horned Frogs finished the regular season with seven straight victories as they await their first NCAA tournament bid since 2010. Last season, TCU played in the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament. The Buffaloes were a Sweet Sixteen team each of the last two seasons and have played in three straight NCAA tournaments, winning two games in two days to get to Friday’s quarterfinal.

The Horned Frogs clinched the regular-season championship on Sunday night with a 51-48 win at Baylor. Sedona Prince finished with 16 points and 19 rebounds and Big 12 Player of the Year Hailey Van Lith added 14 points. Van Lith averages 17.6 points and 5.4 assists while Prince puts up 17.6 points, 9.4 boards and 3.1 blocks per game.

Lior Garzon knocked down a jumper with 1:28 left as Colorado beat Arizona 61-58 on Thursday, winning two games in a single Big 12 for the first time since 1997 after returning to the league this season. Tabitha Betson scored 16 points in the win while Kennedy Sanders added 14. With leading scorer Frida Formann sidelined with a stress fracture in her foot, Jade Masogayo tops the team at 12.1 points per game, with Garzon netting 10.9 points a night. Sara-Rosa Smith averages 4.5 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds.

On Jan. 1, TCU beat Colorado for the first time in program history, taking a 63-50 homecourt victory to improve to 4-1 all-time against the Buffs. Mark Campbell is 49-15 in his second season coaching the Horned Frogs while JR Payne has a 163-114 record in his ninth season at Colorado. Friday’s victor meets the winner of the Kansas State-West Virginia quarterfinal in a semifinal matchup on Saturday.
