No. 3 UConn (28-3) rolled through the Big East Conference, running its regular-season conference winning streak to 37 games after a second straight 18-0 campaign. On Saturday, the No. 1-seeded Huskies begin their quest for a fifth straight Big East tournament crown against No. 8 seed St. John’s (16-14) in a quarterfinal matchup at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The Red Storm finished 5-13 in conference play and advanced through the first-round on Friday. UConn has a run of 35 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and was a Final Four team last season. St. John’s last played in the NCAA tourney in 2023 and reached the second round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament a season ago.

The Red Storm put together a big second half, outscoring No. 9 seed Butler 38-17 on Friday en route to a 66-50 first-round win at the Big East tournament. Ber’Nyah Mayo scored 16 points while Skye Owen finished with 13 points and five steals in the victory. Lashae Dwyer leads the team at 13.5 points per game, Mayo gets 11.5 points a night and Phoenix Gedeon averages 5.6 points and a team-best 4.8 rebounds.

The Huskies completed their unbeaten conference slate on Sunday afternoon with a 92-57 romp over visiting Marquette. Paige Bueckers finished with 19 points and seven assists while Sarah Strong added 17 points. Bueckers nets a team-high 18.6 points per game while Strong averages 16.1 points and 7.9 boards.

UConn ran its all-time record to 51-18 with two blowout wins this season, 71-45 at St. John’s on Jan. 15 and 78-40 at home on Feb. 12. The Red Storm was the last Big East team to beat the Huskies, getting a 69-64 road win on Feb. 21, 2023. Geno Auriemma, who has guided UConn to a record 11 national championships, is 1,241-165 in his 40th season on the bench. Joe Tartamella has a 240-172 mark in his 13th season at St. John’s with four NCAA tourney bids.
