The Big Sky Conference tournament opens on Saturday with No. 10 seed Portland State (4-23) taking on ninth-seeded Northern Colorado (13-16) in a first-round game at Idaho Central Arena in Boise. The Vikings finished 1-17 in conference play and have lost their last 14 games while the Bears dropped to ninth place at 6-12 by closing the regular season on a three-game losing streak. Northern Colorado made its lone NCAA tournament appearance in 2018 and last reached the postseason in the 2019 NIT. Portland State was an NCAA tourney team in 2019.

The Bears missed two shots in the paint in the final seconds in a 68-67 overtime loss to visiting Weber State on Sunday night. London Gamble scored 23 points, Silvia Nativi added 11 and Aniah Hall grabbed 11 rebounds. Gamble is the team’s only double-digit scorer at 10.4 points per game, with Tatum West averaging 8.6 points and 6.9 boards.

The Vikings dropped a 69-57 decision at Sacramento State on Monday night to close its regular season. Lana Wenger had 17 points while Rhema Ogele finished with 15 points and five steals. Alaya Fitzgerald leads the team at 12.0 points per game, with Ogele averaging 9.3 points and 7.2 rebounds.

Northern Colorado is 26-12 in the all-time series, with the teams splitting two games this season. Portland State got its lone Big Sky victory at home, 58-52, on Jan. 16 before losing on the road 68-50 on Feb. 15. Kristen Mattio is 56-66 in her fourth season coaching the Bears while Chelsey Gregg has a 32-86 mark in her fourth year with the Vikings. The winner takes on top-seeded Montana State in a Sunday quarterfinal matchup.
