The 11th-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes will take on the sixth-seeded Michigan State Spartans in the second round of the Big Ten tournament on Thursday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. THe Hawkeyes opened tournament play against the 14th-seeded Wisconsin Badgers on Wednesday, winning handily in an 81-54 victory, marking the team’s third straight win. The Hawkeyes were led offensively by Lucy Olsen who finished the game with 19 points. Despite Olsen being the only Hawkeye in double figures, the team was still able to shoot 57 percent from the field and 55 percent from long range, marks that will serve the Hawkeyes well against a strong Michigan State squad.

The Spartans earned a first round bye in the tournament after finishing in sixth place in the conference standings with an overall record of 21-8 and a conference record of 11-7. The team finished out the regular season with a big 73-58 win over Minnesota on Saturday at home.

Five Spartans finished in double figures in the win, led by Grace Vanslooten who turned in a 15-point performance. Julia Ayrault finished closely behind with 13 points and led on the boards with nine rebounds, all of which were defensive. The team finished the game shooting 44 percent from the field and 39 percent from long range while going 12-for-20 from the line.

Michigan State and Iowa met way back in December and the Spartans earned a narrow 68-66 win over then-No.21 Iowa at home.
