UNLV will host Loyola Marymount on Monday night to open the 2024-2025 women’s basketball season.
A new women’s basketball season is upon us, and on Monday night, Loyola Marymount will travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV in a non-conference matchup at Cox Pavilion. The Lions had a tough time last season, finishing the season at 11-19 overall and just 5-12 in conference play for a spot in seventh place in the West Coast Conference standings. The team made it into the WCC Tournament and won its opening game against Saint Mary’s in a 78-62 victory, but fell in the second round to Portland in a tough 78-51 defeat. This season’s roster will welcome 10 newcomers after head coach Aarika Hughes spent a lot of the offseason recruiting. Five freshmen will come in ready to make an impact as well as five transfers who will bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and collegiate minutes to the Lions.

The Rebels come into Monday’s season opener with hope for another successful season as well as another conference title. Last season, the team finished the season at the top of the Mountain West standings to claim the regular season title with a conference record of 17-1 and an overall record of 30-3. The Rebels went on to win the conference tournament with a big 66-49 victory over San Diego State before falling to Creighton in the first round of the NCAA tournament in a tough 87-73 defeat. With the team returning 10 of its 14 players from last season, the chance for a fourth consecutive regular season title, as well as a fourth consecutive tournament title, is a high one.
UNLV and Loyola Marymount have met 11 times in their histories and the Rebels hold the 8-3 advantage going into Monday’s opener. Last year, the teams met early in the season and UNLV won by 10 in a 72-62 victory in Los Angeles.
