Maryland and Norfolk State will begin NCAA Tournament play on Saturday afternoon with a first round game at the Xfinity Center.
March Madness is underway in women’s basketball and on Saturday afternoon, the 13th-seeded Norfolk State Spartans will try to pull off an upset over the fourth-seeded Maryland Terrapins as they meet at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland. The Spartans made it into the NCAA Tournament after beating second-seed Howard 68-56 in the MEAC Tournament to earn an automatic bid and marking their 19th straight win. Kierra Wheeler led the team’s offense, scoring 19 points while Diamond Johnson and Da’Brya Clark joined her in double figures with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Wheeler has powered the Norfolk State offense all season and is averaging 19 points per game. The Spartans will look to her to continue that domination against the Terps.

Maryland finished the regular season with an overall record of 23-6 and a Big Ten record of 13-5, but lost to Michigan in the first game of Big Ten tournament play. With their strong season, however, the Terps were a shoe in to be admitted to the NCAA Tournament and they will look to prove that with a big win on Saturday. Maryland will look to dynamic duo Shyanne Sellers and Kaylene Smikle to continue to lead the offense as they are currently averaging 29 and 28.6 points per game, respectively. If Norfolk State can shut those two players down, the game has a chance to be much closer than expected.
Saturday’s game between Norfolk State and Maryland will be the first meeting between the two programs. Tune in to see if the Spartans can blow some brackets with an upset.
