After sweeping through Big East regular-season and tournament play without a loss, second-seeded UConn (31-3) opens its NCAA tournament on Saturday when it takes on No. 15 seed Arkansas State (21-10) at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut. The Huskies have won five straight Big East tournaments since returning to the conference in 2020-21 and are playing in their 34th straight NCAA tourney after reaching the Final Four last season. The Red Wolves are making their first appearance in March Madness after winning the Sun Belt Conference tournament title.

UConn rolled to a 70-50 victory over No. 2 seed Creighton on March 10 at Uncasville, Connecticut, to win the Big East tournament. Paige Bueckers leads the team at 19.0 points per game, with Sarah Strong averaging 16.0 points and 8.4 rebounds.

Arkansas State punched its first ticket to the NCAA tourney on March 10 in Pensacola, Florida, knocking off top-seeded James Madison in a come-from-behind overtime victory, 86-79, to claim the Sun Belt’s automatic bid. Zylon Shannon scores 11.0 points per game, with Kennedie Montue getting 10.4 points a night and Wynter Rogers averaging 6.0 points and 6.1 boards.

Saturday will mark the first meeting between the programs. Geno Auriemma, the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history, is 1,244-165 in his 40 seasons leading the Huskies, with a record 11 national championships. Destinee Rogers has a 55-56 mark in her fourth season coaching the Red Wolves.
