5th-seeded Ole Miss takes on No. 12 seed Ball State in the Spokane regional 1 1st round at Waco, Texas

Ole Miss (20-10) is the No. 5 seed in the Spokane regional 1 and opens its NCAA tournament on Friday night when it takes on 12th-seeded Ball State (27-7) in a first-round matchup at Foster Pavilion in Waco, Texas. The Rebels earned an at-large bid after it lost in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference tournament while the Cardinals won both the regular-season and tournament titles in the Mid-American Conference. It is the fourth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance for Ole Miss, which lost in the second round last season, while Ball State is back in March Madness for the first time since 2009.

The Rebels dug too deep a hole against top-seeded Texas in its SEC tournament quarterfinal in Greenville, South Carolina, on March 7, dropping a 70-63 decision. Madison Scott paces a balanced attack at 11.9 points per game, with Kennedy Todd-Williams scoring 11.4 points a night and Starr Jacobs averaging 10.9 points and 6.0 rebounds.

The Cardinals punched their ticket to the Big Dance with a 65-58 victory over No. 2 seed Toledo in the MAC tourney championship game in Cleveland on Saturday. Alex Richard averages 16.5 points and 7.1 rebounds while Ally Becki gets 13.9 points and 6.3 assists per game.

Friday’s game is the first meeting between the programs, with the winner taking on the winner of the earlier game between No. 13 seed Grand Canyon and fourth-seeded Baylor. Yolett McPhee-McCuin is 123-94 in her seventh season at Ole Miss while Brady Sallee has a 264-154 mark in his 13th season coaching at Ball State.
