Defending champion South Carolina continues its quest for a repeat on Friday against Maryland in Birmingham

After two wins apiece at home to open the NCAA tournament, No. 4 seed Maryland (25-7) and top-seeded South Carolina (32-3) collide on Friday night at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama, in a semifinal game in the Birmingham Regional 2. The Gamecocks, the defending national champions, are looking for a fifth straight Final Four appearance while the Terrapins are in their 14th straight NCAA tourney as well as their fourth Sweet Sixteen in five years, and reached the Elite Eight in 2023. Their last Final Four berth was in 2015.

Sarah Te-Biasu’s 3-pointer with 12 seconds left in regulation forced overtime and Maryland finally outlasted No. 5 seed Alabama for a 111-108 double-OT victory in a second-round game at home on Monday. Shyanne Sellers scored 28 points, Te-Biasu added 26 and Kaylene Smilke finished with 24, while Allie Kubek (12) and Mir McLean (10) each had double-digit rebounds. Smilke leads the team at 18.0 points per game, with Sellers netting 14.5 points a night and Christina Dalce averaging 8.5 points and 7.6 boards.

South Carolina broke away from stubborn ninth-seed Indiana after halftime on Sunday and held on down the stretch for a 64-53 second-round win. Bree Hall had 11 points, Chloe Kitts finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Sania Feagin also dropped 10 points. Joyce Edwards scores a team-high 13.2 points per game, with MiLaysia Fulwiley adding 11.8 points per contest and Kitts averaging 10.1 points and 7.9 boards.

The Gamecocks are 6-2 against the Terps and have won the last five, most recently a win at home in November 2023. Dawn Staley is 472-109 in her 17th season at South Carolina, with national championships in 2017, 2022 and 2024. Brenda Frese has a 607-168 mark in her 23rd season coaching at Maryland, leading it to a national championship in 2006.
