The Portland Pilots try to stay undefeated against the Princeton Tigers in women’s college basketball action.
This season one of the best mid-major teams floating under the radar in women’s college basketball is Portland (8-0). The Pilots are off to their best start under head coach Michael Meek in his sixth season with the program. In Meek’s previous five seasons he has led the Pilots to the NCAA Tournament twice (2023, 2024) and a conference championship three times (2020, 2023 and 2024). They will have their hands full with this Princeton (5-2) team that has won three straight games and is playing its best basketball of the season. The senior duo of Emme Shearer and Maisie Burnham have really shined early this season scoring and getting to the free-throw line as well as anyone in the country.

Shearer is in her fifth season with the Pilots and is off to the best start to a season. The biggest difference this season is Shearer’s efficiency going from a career 46% shooter in her first 122 games to 54.2% in the first eight games this season.
That efficiency has Shearer up to 17.0 points per game on 5.1 free-throw attempts per game. Burnham is having her best season with the Pilots and is back to her scoring ways as a freshman with Eastern Washington. She is averaging a career-best 16.4 points per game on 53.9% shooting getting to the line 6.0 times herself.
For the Tigers the first task is slowing down Shearer and Burnham with a defense that has been the team’s identity for the team under head coach Carla Berube. In her first four seasons with the Tigers the defense finished ranked first, fifth, sixth and 20th before this season where they are 196th in the country in points allowed per game.
