    Lauren Betts leads top-overall seed UCLA in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against the feisty Richmond Spiders.

    In the first round eighth-seeded Richmond made program history by winning its first ever NCAA Tournament game in women’s college basketball. The reward for the Spiders is top-overall seed UCLA in the second round. Junior Maggie Doogan played one of the best games of her career in the Spiders first round win over Georgia Tech. She led the charge with 30 points, 15 rebounds and six assists on 11-18 shooting. This season the Spiders have won all three games Doogan has scored 30 or more points, all six games she notched a double-double and are 6-1 when she dishes out six or more assists. Doogan will need another monster game to pull off one of the biggest upsets in the history of the NCAA Tournament.

    In the history of the women’s college basketball NCAA Tournament only five number one seeds have lost in the second round to an eight or nine seed. Most recently in 2023 eighth-seeded Ole Miss upset Stanford and in the same season, ninth-seeded Miami (FL) upset Indiana.

    The Bruins cruised through the first round in an 84-46 win over Southern. Lauren Betts led six players in double-figures and eight players who scored at least nine points. As a team the Bruins dished out 23 assists on 26 made field goals while shooting 55.6% from the field.

    The winner of this game will advance on to play either fourth-seeded Baylor or the fifth-seeded Rebels, who have a recent history of upsetting number one seeds in the NCAA Tournament.
